Revealed: The World’s First Video Game Glasses! What did they look like?

Not quite what you expected, eh? 🙂

Pac Man was first released in Japan in May 1980. By October the game had been licensed for U.S. distribution. I never did get the big deal about it. I think it was one of the dullest of the classic arcade games. Regardless, somehow it became a so-called cultural phenomenon.

The case still has a tag which reads Korvette’s. The retail chain was out of business by the end of December 1980. All the Pac Man merchandise must have arrived in the U.S. at the same time as the game itself.

This suggests it was a carefully orchestrated phenomenon.

In a vacuum free of hype was the game good enough to suck people into dumping over $2 billion worth of quarters in Pac Man machines?

I don’t know. But these sunglasses and their case are great.
