I remember once when I was living with a girlfriend for the first time, she was in the bathroom preparing for her workday. As I passed I saw a frightening looking contraption in her hand. I’d never seen such a thing. It looked like a miniature torture device. She slowly raised it to her right eye. I froze. She noticed me freezing and laughed.

It was an eyelash curler.

These make-up glasses from Revlon were a pleasanter looking accoutrement. There’s something definitively 1950s about them. It’s hard not to imagine Marilyn Monroe or Ava Gardner wearing a pair while applying makeup in the bathroom.

  1. We saw these from time to time in the mid 60’s (my entry point). I believe Tura made one, and Neostyle made one that flipped up, as opposed to flip down.

Oh, there were more varieties. The book had a good one with circular lenses inset into square, flip up panels. Very “Modern” looking.

I have two fairly farsighted patients who use them os they can see to put in their contact lenses

  3. I wish I could find an rx-able pair again! I used to sell these like CRAZY in the 80’s and early 90’s. I have many patients that would love a pair (my “older self” included). The only thing I can find similar is a ready made otc style. Any suggestions?
